This has been a burning question for gamers for almost ten years now. At least since Microsoft entered the console wars as a newcomer with the XBOX, while Sony was making its second entry with the Playstation 2.
Now the war has carried into a new generation with the vaunted Playstation 3 and the ever-popular XBOX 360. Personally, I have a hard time making these types of decisions so I often end up with all of the above.
There is one thing as a seasoned XBOX 360 owner that has really been bothering me. That is the known hardware failure affectionately known as the “Red Ring of Death.” I got my 1st XBOX 360 in the summer of 2006 and I kept it about a year.
I sold my original 360 to a friend in order to replace it with an Elite system. I had my elite rolling along for about a month or so when my friend called me up and asked me about some flashing red lights on the front of the console.
I had heard some stories about red lights, but I wasn’t sure so I looked it up online. I saw that this was a fairly common issue and that Microsoft has a mail-order warranty repair program that could correct the problem safely and at no cost to the consumer.
He sent the XBOX off and a couple weeks later had a refurbished unit on his doorstep. I was pretty impressed with the ease at which this was done and aside from losing your console for a couple weeks, there was really nothing to gripe about.
Plus I had the top of the line elite system and surely Microsoft had gotten all the bugs out with the elite. Needless to say, I was wrong. I did purchase an extended warranty and I have already had to have my Elite system repaired three times.
For a device as popular and expensive as an XBOX 360, you would think more would have been done to address these types of issues.
My warranty expired in January of this year and I feel like I am on borrowed time, but I have found a solution for all you 360 lovers out there without a warranty.
It is the “3 Red Light Fix.” For $29.95 you can get an in depth repair guide for the Red Rings of Death (RROD) and other hardware issues. You can save yourself a major headache and possibly make a dollar or two in the process.
With at least 28 Million units at large, a repair expert will be in high demand in a couple months. As a matter of a fact, contact me if you have a out of warranty XBOX 360 with the RROD that you need repaired.
